Mr. Perfect as the WWE World Champion in 1993 (Part 1)

Mr. Perfect was one of the hottest acts in the WWF at the end of 1992. He made a triumphant return at Survivor Series, teaming with Macho Man Randy Savage against Ric Flair and Razor Ramon, and immediately became a thorn in the side of the former champion.

But what if the WWF had kept that momentum going into 1993? What if Mr. Perfect’s body had held up to the demands of the schedule? And what if the company had gone all the way and crowned him WWF Champion?

Today, we’re exploring that fantasy-booking scenario and imagining how different the wrestling landscape of 1993 might have looked if Mr. Perfect had been given the chance to carry the title.

1993 Royal Rumble

Our first stop on this fantasy-booking journey is the 1993 Royal Rumble, with Mr. Perfect entering the match while still embroiled in his feud with Ric Flair and Razor Ramon.

  • Mr. Perfect enters the Royal Rumble at No. 10 and lasts all the way to the finish, eliminating Ric Flair, Jerry Lawler, Skinner and “The Model” Rick Martel along the way. He also finds himself battling Money Inc. virtually single-handedly, helping create the opening that eventually leads to their elimination.
  • By the time the match reaches the final four, Perfect hangs back and conserves his energy while Yokozuna struggles with the makeshift alliance of Macho Man Randy Savage and Bob Backlund. As all three men teeter dangerously near the ropes, Perfect spots his moment, charges in and sends all three crashing to the floor in one stunning sequence.
  • With that, Mr. Perfect wins the Royal Rumble and becomes the No. 1 contender for the WWF Championship. More importantly, he becomes the first man to win the Rumble after entering at No. 10.

A Perfect 10 for a wrestler who was, quite literally, Mr. Perfect.

Road to WrestleMania

On the road to WrestleMania, Mr. Perfect is repeatedly challenged by Ric Flair, who goads him into putting his title shot on the line in exchange for Flair’s career. Never one to back down from a challenge, Perfect accepts and ultimately sends Flair packing from the WWF in a high-stakes match on Monday Night RAW.

Just as Mr. Perfect begins setting his sights on a mouth-watering showdown with the “Excellence of Execution,” Bret “The Hitman” Hart, in the main event of WrestleMania, “The Narcissist” Lex Luger enters the picture, boldly declaring himself to be “beyond perfection.” Luger repeatedly joins forces with “The Bad Guy” Razor Ramon to make life difficult for the No. 1 contender, but Perfect answers the threat by teaming with former world champion Bob Backlund and WWF enforcer the Big Boss Man.

WrestleMania IX

The big day finally arrives. After a valiant battle, the Big Boss Man falls to the bionic forearm of “The Narcissist” Lex Luger. Razor Ramon catches Bob Backlund with a roll-up for the win, while Yokozuna outsmarts Macho Man Randy Savage with a timely assist from the ever-crafty Mr. Fuji. Then comes the moment everyone has been waiting for: the main event between the “Excellence of Execution” and the very symbol of perfection.

From the opening bell, the match becomes a technical chess match. Bret “The Hitman” Hart targets Mr. Perfect’s back, while Perfect zeroes in on Hart’s arm. The two trade holds, counters and chain-wrestling sequences, turning Caesars Palace into a showcase for two of the finest technicians in the business. 

The match reaches its crescendo when Hart sidesteps a top-rope dropkick and immediately locks in the Sharpshooter. Perfect digs deep, summoning every ounce of grit to claw his way toward the ropes. As he finally gets to the ropes, the referee steps in to force the break, but in the ensuing struggle he collides with Hart and is temporarily knocked down. 

That is when Lex Luger makes his move.

Luger storms the ring carrying his giant mirror and takes a wild swing at a dazed Mr. Perfect, who is still recovering from the Sharpshooter. Perfect ducks at the last possible second, and Luger instead smashes the mirror directly into Bret Hart.

Sensing his opening, Perfect dropkicks Luger out of the ring, turns back toward the fallen champion and hoists Hart into the Perfect Plex. The referee comes to just in time to make the count.

One. Two. Three.

Mr. Perfect is the new WWE Champion.

It is the perfect ending to a main event worthy of the occasion: a victory built on athleticism, intelligence, resilience and timing. At long last, Mr. Perfect has reached the top of the mountain.

Behold the perfect reign of the perfect champion.
