Parallels between 2003 and 2026 World Cup Finals and how Win Predictor had to do very little both times
In a nutshell
The D-Day
The final of the 2026 World Cup produced a one-sided beating much to the delight of my friend, the one and only Win Predictor who also practically dozed off throughout the semifinal until being woken up by Jacob Bethell's explosive century.
The final would offer no such snags for my friend. This was at first a canter by any stretch of the imagination until Samson fell trying to up the ante. Jimmy Neesham who accounted for Samson then took two more making it 3 wickets in the space of 5 balls and Hardik Pandya who promoted himself at the expense of his captain found the meaning of hard times. My Win Predictor friend's slumber was about to be disturbed when Shivam Dube smashed 24 of the last over to set-up a gigantic chase for the Kiwis.
| 2026 World T20 Final - The Win Predictor hardly left India's corner |
Tim Seifert who plundered 21 runs of Hardik's first over tried to repeat a Bethell but Axar ensured there would no encore sleep by ensnaring Finn Allen in the very next over. That wicket opened the floodgates and there was a steady procession of wickets before the team finally crumbling under the huge weight of the target that was set.
The Parallels
- Both matches were decided in the first innings itself based on an irreversible tempo set in the first few overs
- India who were chasing in 2003 tried to mount a fightback on the back of Sehwag's half century and Rahul Dravid's 47. New Zealand too had one fifty (Seifert's 52) and one forty (Santner's 43) in its chase
- India defeat New Zealand by almost 100 runs (96 to be precise) while the margin of defeat in 2003 was 125
