A slew of countries exited the Champions Trophy over the last few days. But wasn't there a Champions Trophy that we hosted where everything turned topsy-turvy for us? A loooooooooong time ago but not that long ago there was one such tournament in 2006 where nothing went to script. I literally had to go to Cricinfo to refresh my memory about this tournament. I do however remember:
- The promotions which promised a festival of cricket but what we got was a damp squib
- The interest in the tournament waning once India was dumped out at the group stage
- That the final was an anti-climax and how Australia briefly let go off their manners while accepting the trophy. After decking us out the tournament they also shoved the president of BCCI, Mr. Sharad Pawar for good measure
India who were firmly entrenched in the Greg Chappell era vacillated between able and awful.
- Sachin was not at his best
- Dravid was unable to prop up the middle order
- Irfan Pathan's efficacy was being nullified with his batting responsibilities AND
- Dhoni couldn't produce the late order fireworks which would seal the deal in favor of the home team
If there was one highlight from this tournament, then it was the Jerome Taylor's hat-trick which snuffed out Australia's chase during their league encounter. The rest of the matches in this tournament were too one-sided and uninspiring (once again thank you Cricinfo for helping me recall this abysmal tournament which happened at a time when one side was just too good for the others).
For the sheer listlessness displayed, I am inducting the entire Indian team and its coaching staff from this tournament into the 'Most Painful Performances in Cricket Hall of Fame'. What are your memories from this tournament? Please do leave a comment.
Pain Level: About as painful as watching a web series which injects tedium with each passing episode and suddenly grinds down to a halt.
Until Next Time,
Your Cricket Historian.
