Cover Up (1949)

In a nutshell

A delightful whodunit set during the Christmas time with some compelling performances, brisk pacing and a happy ending.

Plot

Sam Donovan (Dennis O'Keefe), an insurance investigator sets off for a small town to delve into the suicide of one, Roger Philips, who by all accounts was an extremely unpleasant man. On the way there he runs into Anita Weatherby (Barbara Britton), daughter of a wealthy banker in Philips' town, Stu Weatherby (Art Baker). The two hit off instantly and Sam makes plans to visit the Weatherby family once he's done wrapping up the Philips case.

Upon arrival Sam calls upon Sheriff Larry Best (William Bendix) to clarify the details of the case only to find all his inquiries being thwarted. Through the evasive replies, Sam learns that no weapon was recovered from the victim's side and the coroner who could have thrown some light into the circumstances of the death is also out of town due to Christmas. The only clue that Sam manages to eke out from the interaction is that the bullet which killed Philips came from a Luger pistol.

With his suspicions sufficiently aroused, Sam consecutively interviews the jeweler who found Philips' body and Philips' niece, Margaret, who eloped and married against his wishes. While the jeweler's response is drowned in diffidence, Margaret appeals Sam to drop the case altogether and treat it as a suicide. Considering the lack of assistance from all corners and the fact that the insurance policy had a double indemnity clause, Sam concludes that Philips was murdered and extends his stay in the town to uncover the killer's tracks.

The extended stay allows Sam to carry on his courtship with Anita and mingle with the Weatherby family. During one of their meetings Anita inadvertently reveals that her father has a Luger pistol in his possession. Sam later learns from Stu that the pistol was given away to a Doctor Gerrow before he moved out of the town. Dr. Gerrow is a man of immense stature in the community and Sam has an inkling that meeting Gerrow might finally resolve all his questions. But that lead goes nowhere too as Dr. Gerrow dies suddenly with a heart attack.

The setback notwithstanding Sam soldiers on to construct a timeline of events on the fatal day which highlights three prominent suspects:
  1. Margaret's husband Frank who had a major tiff with Philips before his death
  2. Stu Weatherby who was helping Frank with a personal loan
  3. Sheriff Best who witnessed the argument between Frank and Philips
Will Sam be able to unlock the puzzle in time to make sure that justice is served? You have to watch Cover Up to answer that question.

Conclusion

If your mind is itching for an old fashioned suspense drama then give Cover Up a try. Its taut screenplay and solid performances from the main cast will keep you engaged. I want to single out Dennis O'Keefe for anchoring this film with his captivating charm. That's not all, there's also a bonus twist in the end which ensures you go home with a smile.

Zamarrud Theatre Hyderabad

More than two decades ago a 5 year old boy (yours truly) found himself in Abids which was certainly then the microcosm of Hyderabad. Abids in the 80s <Courtesy: OkaTeluguAbbayi > The occasion was a family outing to Zamarrud Cinema. And we are stepping out for not just any movie my friends, my parents decided that nothing less than the Raj Kapoor blockbuster Chori Chori was good enough for us. To be honest I wasn't exactly enthused about watching a black and white film of a bygone era even though the movie had all the credentials of a classic. But that was before I saw Zamarrud, the theatre where the movie was being played. Nested in the heart of Abids, Zamarrud was the perfect amalgamation of Hyderabad's old world charm and new fangled ways. Zamarrud was not just any theatre, it was one of the first air conditioned halls in Hyderabad, a premiere cinema hall which used to host the best of what the film industry had to offer and the place to go for Hyderabad...

KBR National Park

In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the fifth largest city in India - Hyderabad lies KBR (Kasu Brahmananda Reddy) National Park . It's difficult to imagine a natural habitat in the center of a concrete jungle but that's exactly what KBR park is - an oasis in middle of an urban desert . One of Hyderabad's prized tourist attractions which in my opinion doesn't get the attention it deserves. The Entrance <Courtesy: Andhra Aroma > I don't remember when I first noticed the park but it soon became a sight which I couldn't miss during the course of my everyday commute to work. I always wondered what lay beyond the entrance but never found the time to check it out for myself until last year. But let me back up a bit, there's a back story to my first visit to the park. In my ' Count Your Blessings ' post, I talked about how a walk around my office building started a positive change in my life. That incident made ' walking ' ...

Black Eagle (1988)

I have a soft corner in my heart for the action films of the eighties . I am also a huge fan of movies where stars are cast against type ( see Vera Cruz ). So, when I got a chance to watch 1988's  Black Eagle  pitting international action star Jean-Claude Van Damme as the 'villain' against acclaimed martial arts guru Sho Kosugi ,   I just couldn't let it pass by. Black Eagle 1988 Plot When a US F-111 jet carrying a laser tracking device goes missing in the Mediterranean, agent Ken Tani (Sho Kosugi) code-named ' Black Eagle ' is summoned to retrieve the device before the Soviet KGB acquires it. Ken unwillingly lands in Malta and is immediately targeted by Soviet Agent Andrei (Jean-Claude Van Damme). Will Ken acquire the tracking device? Who wins? (Guess that answer is obvious!) The Cliches Cliches are the life and soul of action movies. When you have a martial arts movie in the spy genre those cliches only double. So here are all the noteworthy cli...

At Bertram's Hotel - Not one of Agatha Christie's finest

In a nutshell A plodding whodunit which takes its own sweet time to set things up but doesn't quite deliver the punch at the end with its reveal. Plot  Miss Marple returns to a favorite childhood spot, Bertram's hotel, to experience the nostalgia of the bygone years. The hotel's guests include Miss Marple's gregarious friend Selena Hazy, absent minded Canon Pennyfather who's making his way to a conference in Lucerne via London, hypervigilant Colonel Luscombe accompanied by his precocious ward Elvira Blake and tabloid friendly socialite Lady Bess Sedgwick who always seems to have a knack of generating headlines. While Miss Marple does take great pleasure in the comforts of the place she also quickly comes to sense that there's something sinister going on behind all that external facade. While a motley group of characters is permeating Bertram's hotel, the city is being terrorized by the daring thefts of a criminal gang which has evaded the police by skillfull...
