The 22 Day Challenge

Number 22 and I go a long way. Make no mistake I don't believe in either lucky numbers or numerology but several important events happened in my life on the 22nd and just when I make up my mind to dismiss all of it as a coincidence, 22 pops up out of nowhere to once again remind me of it's significance. But this blog is not about my affinity to or my experiences with number 22.

September, 2016 was a tough month. I was saddled with multiple projects and really didn't have much of a breathing space. It was during the time that my sister nominated me for the 22 Day Push-up Challenge. I don't believe in taking up more than what I can chew but when your little sister pushes you forward for a noble cause, you don't have much of a choice. I was initially surprised that number 22 found it's way into my life again but was disturbed when I found that on average 22 war veterans were committing suicide in US everyday. Having lost some good friends to the malady of suicide, I could understand how hard it hits when someone you know suddenly decides to pull the switch. Incidents like these sap the life force out of near and dear and leave them with unanswered questions for a lifetime. I took up the 22 Day Push-Up Challenge as not only a salute to the war veterans but also as a tribute to my fallen friends. But this blog is not about how I accomplished the 22 day Push-Up challenge, it's about the number 22 itself and it's omnipresence in all our lives.

While I was pushing myself to achieve the target of 22 push-ups a day I continuously wondered about the significance of number 22 and whether it had any universal relevance. Guess what after careful analysis, I do believe 22 is a number which affects most of us one way or the other. Why? Please keep on reading (Yes you guessed it right, this is the topic of the blog):

  1. All of us working in sectors with 5 day work weeks typically work anywhere between 21-23 days a month which means on average we work 22 days every month. So our career (and in one way our life) totally depends on what we do in those 22 days.
  2. Most of us finish our undergraduate degrees by the time we are 21 and step into full time careers by the time we are 22. For many of us, 22 is the age when the reality knocks on our doors and thrusts us into this big bad world. 22 is the age where impossible dreams make way for probable ambitions. 22 is the age where life forces you to start striking a balance between your personal and professional lives. If you were to ask me, i would say that the foundation for our adult life is laid at 22.
  3. Research says that any activity taken up for 21 consecutive days becomes a habit. So the 22nd day is the day that you officially make a habit or break a habit. Habits essentially define you so there's no denying the fact as to how important the number 22 is for a healthy and successful life.
  4. We have all heard of the phrase Catch-22. It's a conundrum where in what you want and what you need to get what you want are hopelessly interlinked. For Example: If you don't have experience you wont get a job but unless you have a job you cannot get the experience. 22 was an arbitrary number chosen by Catch-22 inventor Joseph Heller. Was Joseph Heller thinking on the same lines as I did when he assigned the number 22 to this principle? We will never know but I do know this, our very life is a Catch-22 principle. Everyone wants a change for the better in their lives, but in order for a change to occur we must become the very change we want to see.
  5. All of us must have dealt with geometry during our school days. In order to calculate the area of the circle we need a constant known as Pi which is nothing but the ratio of the circle's circumference to it's diameter. Pi's approximate value is 3.14159 or 22/7. Even the most fundamental equations require Pi which means number 22 has to be in the mix to arrive at a solution.
So after the excellent analysis provided above, do you agree with me now about the universal significance of number 22? Now you could argue that a similar set of facts can be constructed for just about any number and I would agree with you because in my opinion all numbers are magical and divine. Life is all about experiences and your life could acquaint you with a totally different set of numbers than mine. All I can say is my experience with 22 has led me to believe that life is a 22 day challenge which must be dealt with every month. Each month the challenge acquires new dimensions but the beauty is in evolving and rising up to that challenge.

As for the 22 day Push-Up challenge, if you are serious about a strict personal regime and are also interested in making a social statement through your regime then this is the right initiative for you. Nominate only those who are interested in the genuineness of the cause and do ensure that you finish what you started so that you serve as an inspiration for those whom you nominated. Last but not the least anything you do is ineffectual as long as you divert attention away from the cause to yourself.

'The 22 Day Challenge' is my 44th blog post. Now this is no coincidence or divine magic. I arranged for it to be my 44th blog post. I could achieve this milestone but couldn't finish the blog on December 22nd as I had planned. So magic has to happen, it can neither be arranged nor forced. Let patterns appear, do not attempt to see a pattern in anything and everything because there's nothing predictable about the magic of life . May the magic of the numbers reveal itself and prove special for your lives.

Until Next Time,

Your Life Analyst,
J.J. Chaitanya

Mahabharata by C.Rajagopalachari

There are books which you read and then there are books which make you read them and change your life. Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari's (Rajaji's) Mahabharata belongs to the latter category. Mahabharata introduced me to the joy of reading books as a kid and today I couldn't have picked a better topic for my 25th post. I cannot describe what a pleasure and honor it is to extol the virtues of this classic book during this holy festive season of  Makar Sankranti . Mahabharata by C.Rajagopalachari The story of Mahabharata is as old as the mountains and has been retold several times. Mahabharata by Rajaji however stands out in my mind because here is a story which is spiritual yet not religious, is thought provoking yet not preachy, is compelling yet not tedious. The story left an indelible impression upon me for several reasons which are: Rajaji uses extremely simple language to convey some of the finer aspects of the saga. I was 10 years old when I read Mahabharata

KBR National Park

In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the fifth largest city in India - Hyderabad lies KBR (Kasu Brahmananda Reddy) National Park . It's difficult to imagine a natural habitat in the center of a concrete jungle but that's exactly what KBR park is - an oasis in middle of an urban desert . One of Hyderabad's prized tourist attractions which in my opinion doesn't get the attention it deserves. The Entrance I don't remember when I first noticed the park but it soon became a sight which I couldn't miss during the course of my everyday commute to work. I always wondered what lay beyond the entrance but never found the time to check it out for myself until last year. But let me back up a bit, there's a back story to my first visit to the park. In my ' Count Your Blessings ' post, I talked about how a walk around my office building started a positive change in my life. That incident made ' walking ' a fixture in my everyday ro

Zamarrud Theatre Hyderabad

More than two decades ago a 5 year old boy (yours truly) found himself in Abids which was certainly then the microcosm of Hyderabad. Abids in the 80s <Courtesy: OkaTeluguAbbayi > The occasion was a family outing to Zamarrud Cinema. And we are stepping out for not just any movie my friends, my parents decided that nothing less than the Raj Kapoor blockbuster Chori Chori was good enough for us. To be honest I wasn't exactly enthused about watching a black and white film of a bygone era even though the movie had all the credentials of a classic. But that was before I saw Zamarrud, the theatre where the movie was being played. Nested in the heart of Abids, Zamarrud was the perfect amalgamation of Hyderabad's old world charm and new fangled ways. Zamarrud was not just any theatre, it was one of the first air conditioned halls in Hyderabad, a premiere cinema hall which used to host the best of what the film industry had to offer and the place to go for Hyderabad'

Chhatrapati Shivaji Biography - Challenging Destiny by Medha Deshmukh-Bhaskaran

I guess it was destiny that the 150th post of Life Etc Etc had to be about Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji rose like a phoenix from humble beginnings in the 17th century and laid the foundation for the Maratha empire which changed the course of  history. The history I studied at school restricted his life and achievements to a single chapter and quite erroneously credited the British Rule with the decline of the Mughal empire. I found out later on that it was in fact the Marathas under the able leadership of Shivaji who hastened the Mughal empire's downfall. They were the preeminent power whom the British had to checkmate in order to wrest control of the Indian subcontinent. Despite such monumental achievements my history syllabi had very little information about Shivaji. It was therefore a no-brainer for me to pick up this book and discover for myself why the history of India would never be complete without the mention of Shivaji.  In order to understand any historical c

Black Eagle (1988)

I have a soft corner in my heart for the action films of the eighties . I am also a huge fan of movies where stars are cast against type ( see Vera Cruz ). So, when I got a chance to watch 1988's  Black Eagle  pitting international action star Jean-Claude Van Damme as the 'villain' against acclaimed martial arts guru Sho Kosugi ,   I just couldn't let it pass by. Black Eagle 1988 Plot When a US F-111 jet carrying a laser tracking device goes missing in the Mediterranean, agent Ken Tani (Sho Kosugi) code-named ' Black Eagle ' is summoned to retrieve the device before the Soviet KGB acquires it. Ken unwillingly lands in Malta and is immediately targeted by Soviet Agent Andrei (Jean-Claude Van Damme). Will Ken acquire the tracking device? Who wins? (Guess that answer is obvious!) The Cliches Cliches are the life and soul of action movies. When you have a martial arts movie in the spy genre those cliches only double. So here are all the noteworthy cli
